How to Claim KWSP / EPF for a Deceased Family Member: Complete 2026 Guide

The Employees Provident Fund (KWSP/EPF) allows designated nominees or lawful heirs to withdraw the deceased member's savings and apply for the Death Benefit (Bantuan Kematian).

1. Did the Deceased Nominate a Beneficiary?

The claim process differs substantially based on whether a nomination was formally registered with KWSP:

  • With Nomination (Muslim): Nominee acts as a trustee/executor (Wasi) to distribute according to Faraid.
  • With Nomination (Non-Muslim): Nominee is the absolute beneficiary and receives the credited sum directly.
  • Without Nomination: The funds will be distributed based on the Distribution Act 1958 or via a Grant of Probate / Letter of Administration from the High Court / Amanah Raya.

2. KWSP Death Benefit (Bantuan Kematian)

KWSP pays a one-off death benefit assistance of RM2,500 to eligible dependents (widow/widower, children, or parents) if the deceased was a Malaysian citizen below age 60 at the time of death and application is submitted within 6 months.

3. Required Documents for Submission

  1. KWSP 9KM (AHL) Withdrawal Application Form.
  2. Original & Copy of Applicant's MyKad.
  3. Original & Copy of Deceased's Death Certificate.
  4. Proof of Relationship (e.g. Marriage Certificate, Child's Birth Certificate).
  5. Applicant's Active Bank Account Passbook / Statement.
