How to Claim KWSP After a Death in Malaysia

How to Claim KWSP After a Death in Malaysia

When someone passes away, their KWSP savings don't disappear. As a family member or nominated beneficiary, you may be entitled to withdraw those funds — but the process isn't always straightforward. Here's exactly how to do it.

First, understand the two scenarios

How the claim works depends on whether your loved one made a nomination with KWSP before they passed.

If there is a nominee, the withdrawal goes directly to that person. The process is relatively simple and fast.

If there is no nominee, the funds are subject to the estate distribution process, which takes significantly longer and may involve additional legal steps before anything can be released.

Either way, the process starts at a KWSP branch.

Step by step: how to make the claim

Step 1 — Visit your nearest KWSP branch

Head to any KWSP branch and let the counter staff know you're there to apply for a withdrawal from a deceased member's account. They will guide you to the right counter and provide the forms you need.

Step 2 — Fill in the forms

KWSP will give you three forms to complete:

  • KWSP 4B — to check whether the account has a registered nominee
  • RCM 001 — to check the account balance
  • 9KM (AHL) — to apply for the withdrawal of funds
  • Fill in all three forms before submitting.

Step 3 — Gather your documents

    You will need the following:

  • Death certificate of the deceased
  • A copy of the deceased's identity card
  • Your own identity card
  • Proof of your relationship to the deceased (a marriage certificate, birth certificate or similar document)
  • Prepare three copies of each document — one set per form.

Step 4 — Submit everything at the branch

Hand in all three completed forms along with the supporting documents at the branch. There is no online option for this — it must be done in person.

Step 5 — Wait for processing

Processing timelines vary depending on the branch and the complexity of the case. Once approved, the funds will be transferred directly to the nominee's or applicant's bank account.

Don't forget the Death Assistance payment

While you're at the branch, ask about KWSP's Death Assistance — a one-time payment of RM2,500 available if your loved one passed away before the age of 60. This needs to be applied for within 6 months of the date of death and is subject to KWSP's discretion, so it's worth asking about it directly at the counter.

Many families miss this simply because no one told them it existed.

What if there is no nomination?

If your loved one did not register a nominee with KWSP, the withdrawal process is more complex. The funds cannot be released directly to the family until the estate has been legally administered. Depending on the size of the estate and whether a will exists, this could involve applying through Amanah Raya Berhad, the High Court or an appointed estate administrator.

This process can take months or even years. If you are in this situation, getting legal advice early will save you significant time and frustration.

    Frequently asked questions

Can anyone in the family make this claim?

If there is a registered nominee, only that person can claim. If there is no nominee, whoever is appointed as the estate administrator or executor handles the process.

Is there a deadline to make the claim?

The Death Assistance payment has a 6-month deadline. For the main withdrawal, there is no strict deadline but it is always best to start sooner rather than later.

Do I need to make an appointment?

No appointment is needed. Walk-ins are accepted at any KWSP branch.

What if I don't have all the documents?

Bring what you have and ask the counter staff what else is needed. They will advise you on the spot.

How will I receive the funds?

The money will be transferred directly to the nominee's or applicant's bank account once the application is approved.
